American Banker’s Jim Dobbs takes a deep dive into analysis by CPG’s Shama Patel and Trevor Fox on the top-performing publicly traded community banks

The 200 top-performing publicly traded banks with less than $2 billion of assets, a list published annually by American Banker, is led by companies with strong profitability metrics, minimal credit losses and ample levels of low-cost deposits.

The median return on average equity (ROAE) for the 200 banks in 2021 was 13.40%, according to data compiled by Capital Performance Group. That far exceed the median for all 438 U.S. banks and thrifts in this peer group — 10.64%. ROAE is a key measure used to determine the rankings.

CPG conducts the rankings analysis using data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Financial data is based on SEC filings. If SEC data was unavailable, regulatory financials were used. Data is for the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2021, unless otherwise indicated. The banks were ranked on three-year return on average equity between 2019 and 2021; tiebreakers as follows: 2021 ROAE, 2020 ROAE, 2019 ROAE (in that order).
