Which banks are getting the most customer engagement through social media? The Financial Brand has just released its Power 100 Social Media Rankings for 3Q13. The blog monitors roughly 2,000 to 2,500 banks and credit unions in 12 English-speaking countries that are on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and ranks them from 1-100 by their overall level of social media activity.

The rankings are weighted (relative value of channel/range and averages for the financial industry/ease of growing audience in channel) and based on a score by the following criteria:

  • 1 pt for every 1,500 Facebook “likes”
  • 1 pt for (Facebook ‘Talking About’) x Facebook Engagement Rate) divided by 20
  • 1 pt for every 500 twitter followers
  • 1 pt for every 1,000 tweets sent
  • 1 pt for every 15,000 YouTube video views
  • 1 pt for every 50 YouTube subscribers

Not surprisingly, large banks are on top. Interestingly, numbers 1 and 2 are strong in different social media channels, but are very close in their Power 100 Score:

One of our favorites fell just out of the top ten: USAA came in at 11. USAA's social media philosophy encourages community, financial education, and customer service. See where you rank at http://thefinancialbrand.com/.
